On Tuesday, April 20, 1999, Columbine High School students and faculty were terrorized with what would be known as the deadliest school shooting in the history of the United States.

High School students Eric Harris and Dyland Klebold came to school armed and willing to kill. The result, 12 students and one teacher dead, and 24 others wounded.

Rachel Joy Scott was the first to be killed. Rachel Scott was an ambitious Columbine High School Junior with a bright future. She was very compassionate and expressed her love of God in her actions every day. Rachel was a daughter, sister, student and a dear friend.

Life as a teenager was no different for Rachel than for the rest of us. There were struggles along with joys. Her journals and writings were ways of expressing who she was and how she wished the world would be. Scott prayed that people would see God through the way she lived her life. Little did she know, her actions and writings would soon impact lives of students and adults around the country.

"You know I do." These four words were said to be the last that were spoken by this amazing person.

Rachel's life would not go without remembrance. Her mother, father, brother, and sister are now traveling the country using her words to help make a difference in schools and communities across the U.S. They are determined to make her dream become a reality. Their message is called Rachel's Challenge.

Rachel's Challenge is targeted towards high school students in hopes that nothing like Columbine will ever happen again. The family members use Rachel's six diaries and acts of sincerity and kindness to motivate teens to "start a chain reaction" in their schools and communities. However the journey does not stop there. Rachel Scott's family believes that parents and community members should also experience the story and reinforce the changes occurring in the youth.

On November 18, 2006, Concordia High School was fortunate enough to have 13 students, 4 teachers and 1 adult attend this life-changing experience in Salina at the Salina South High School. They came back with their spirits refreshed and their attitudes towards others change.

These students joined to form the Rachel's Challenge program. The goal of this small group was to not only bring Rachel's Challenge to our schools and community , but also to encourage a positive lifestyle and keep the challenge going in the halls of our schools and of many others.

Nicole, Gieber, Haley Walsh, and Ashlee Haist believe that, "Once all of our students see this program, we will all see a difference in our school."

The first of the two goals was accomplished by way of time spent by the students in the program and donations from various businesses and organizations. Rachel's sister is coming to tell Rachel's story to our school and community on December 07, 2006.

Now, it is our turn to make a difference by simply taking to heart the words of this amazing person.

BOWERS ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY FOR STATE REPRESENTATIVE:

Elaine Bowers, Concordia has announced her candidacy for the Republican nomination for state representative at the 107th district. The position is now held by Joann Freeborn, who is not seeking reelection.
Bowers is a native Kansan. She was raised on a farm in Ottawa County and is a graduate of Minneapolis High School. She is the daughter of Darrell Haley of Delphos and the late Marjorie Haley. Her father farms and operates a plumbing and electrical business
She graduated from Cloud County Community College in 1983 with a degree in Travel/Tourism Business Management. She met and married Charlie Bowers from Abilene during their second year at CCCC. She and Charlie opened the Concordia Auto Mart Inc, a full service independent auto dealership in 1988. They continue to work together with two locations in Concordia.
The Bowerses have four children. Charles Bowers and wife Julie of Concordia; Brice, a sophomore at CCCC; Haley, a freshman at Concordia High School; and Caleb, a seventh grader at Concordia Junior High School. They have one granddaughter, Kassidy Bowers 11 months.
Bowers is a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic church, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Concordia Area Chamber of Commerce, and is a Big Sister in the local Big Brothers/Big Sisters program. She has belonged to the Concordia Rotary Club since 1994 and has served as club president , board member and in several positions at the district level as well. Prior to her membership, Bowers traveled to Norway in 1992 as a Rotary Group Study Exchange team member where she studied her own vocation as well as the country's government, education, health care and social system. The Bowerses also have been hosts to Rotary Exchange students in there home.
Elaine was on the Cloud County Fair Board and the Cloud County Tourism Board for several terms. Most recently, she has served as a member of the Kansas Department of Revenue Titles and Registration state committee reviewing issues concerning e-titles, e-liens and vehicle documentation. Bowers has been a member of the National Independent Auto Dealers Association and the Kansas Independent Auto Dealers Association since 1988.
Her business was named the Kansas Quality Dealer of the Year in 2000 and she, along with her husband was named the Concordia Area Chamber of Commerce Business Person of the Year in 2003.
As a lifelong resident of the 107th district, Bowers said she believes strong family values, an excellent education system and enhanced economic development opportunities are critical factors in the continued growth and prosperity of North Central Kansas. "We are on the right track with wind and ethanol production in the state of Kansas as well as the image of Kansans to the Nation," she said.
Bowers said a good work ethic and just basic common sense have been the backbone of her business philosophy, "My early days at the Chamber of Commerce taught me to look at the big picture before making a decision, and my 18 years as a business person have trained me to always ask one more question," she said. Bowers also believes that her business knowledge and years of serving on numerous county and community committees, along with the Rotary Foundation, have laid the solid groundwork for her duties in Topeka.
Bowers expressed her gratitude to Freeborn for always valuing the North Central Kansans' opinions and taking the time to listen to her constituents for the last 14 years. The state primary election will be August 01, 2006.

I recently received some special blessings in your nice town of Concordia. I was passing through your town on Easter Sunday, and was experiencing some vehicle problems. I met a caring family: Ron, Heidi, and Nathan Elniff. They were very helpful and went out of their way to assist a stranger. The following day, I received a tremendous amount of help from Charles Bowers at Concordia Auto Mart. Thanks to Charles and his mechanic, they had me back on the road in a timely manner.

Jake's Job

"Jake Morrissette earns money while indulging his love for cars. He works at the Concordia Auto Mart as an Auto Detailer. Jake started detailing cars three years ago. Now he works year-round.

Detailing is an extensive process. Jake starts by washing the engine compartment, doorjambs, and washing and waxing the exterior. Then he vacuums the interior, shampoos the upholstery and washes the windows.

Most of the time Jake works alone in the Detail Shop. Sometimes however, he helps his Dad prep cars for painting in the Body Shop.

The best part about detailing is being around nice, new cars; they are not as dirty and he gets to drive them from the Detail Shop to the front of the lot. Jake hopes the owner of the red '96 Camaro T-top brings the car back to the Auto Mart for detailing while he is on duty. Jake counts that as his favorite car to detail.

Jake's greatest challenge is the clock. It is difficult to finish detailing in an hour and 15 minutes. Sometimes people drop their cars off and need to pick them up at a specific time. Jake has to work quickly to get the cars as clean as possible to meet the deadline. Stains and scratches can also be a pain because they are difficult to remove.

Detailing has shown Jake the value of keeping his possessions in good shape. 'You realize you don't want to let your car go - it makes a mess to clean up.'

Jake uses the money he makes for expenses like gas for his truck and eating out, but he saves a portion of the money for college or a laptop.

Parents, you can steer them to safety with these helpful tips:

Distracted young drivers, including those with ADHD can post dangers on the road. Many sates have responded to this problem by implementing graduated driver licensing. The idea of these programs is based on some of the same principles used to help those with ADHD, namely organization and focus. Kids, in general, and ADHD children, in particular, can have difficulty seeing the consequences of their actions. As they age, this will improve; until then, it's up to us adults to help them help themselves. The following guidelines, designed to aid parents who have children with ADHD, apply to any teen driver:

Communicate. Be clear with your kids about rules and expectations. For my teen daughter, I've come up with the four S's--seat belts, speed, sight, and sound:

The four S's for young drivers:
Seat belts: Everybody wears one.
Speed: Keep to the posted limits.
Sight: Eyes on the road, not on distractions in the car.
Sound: Deal with anything that makes a sound only when off the road and stopped. No calls, text messages, or changing CDs while moving in traffic.

Venus 1500 Operator Wiz

Haley Bowers enjoys working at her family's business, Concordia Auto Mart in Concordia, Kan. This 12-year-old has operated the business's Venus 1500 controlled display for nearly a year - ever since the business purchased its 48x112 Galaxy Display. Her favorite work includes inserting a waving flag in back of the text message, "God Bless America".
Bowers' mother, Elaine, recently drove Haley to the Daktronics Headquarters in Brookings, SD to take in-house Venus 1500 software training. While Bowers enjoys operating and learning about the display she also takes it very seriously: "I have to make sure I know what I am doing because when I get home, I have to teach my dad what I learned."
Before attending the training Bowers knew quite a bit about the Venus 1500 software program. She basically taught herself how to run the controller with a little help from others.
During the one-on-one training, the instructor enabled her to quicken her operating skills, "I did it the long and hard way and she taught me shortcuts."
Bowers makes it clear that she does not like bragging about her operating skills, "Most of my friends don't know I [run the display], they think my parents [run] it."
The modest 12-year-old says even though most of her friends are not aware of her work, some of her teachers are, and are very complimentary.
Bowers, who has two older brothers and one younger one, is the only sibling that operates the business's display.
Besides running the display, Bowers also practices gymnastics in hopes of someday becoming a famous gymnast someday.

Is your car guzzling gas? To find out, jot down your mileage the next time you fill up says David Champion of Consumer Reports. When the tank is 1/4 empty, fill up again. Note the mileage and number of gallons purchased. Calculate how many miles you traveled between fill-ups by subtracting the old mileage from the new. Divide the miles traveled by the gallons added. The result is your miles per gallon.

What's the best way to improve fuel efficiency? Accelerate gently.

Tire Care Tips

To check tread depth of your tires yourself, insert a penny (Lincoln's head first) into one of the tire's grooves. When the penny goes into the groove deeper than the top of Lincoln's head, the tread depth should be safe. The tread depth at this location on the line is greater than 2/32rds of an inch.
If you can see the top of Lincoln's head, you are riding on a tire with a less-than-safe tread depth.
The illustration below shows the different types of abnormal wear your tires could have. In addition to causing your tires to wear out prematurely, abnormal wear can cause an uncomfortable ride and possibly damage your car's suspension components. Teen Car Advice

More teenagers own cars today than ever before, and that's partly because they are busier than ever before. So many teens have after-school activities and jobs that many parents feel they need to buy cars for their children out of convenience.
Surveys now show that three out of four driving-age students have cars, half of which were purchased by parents. Almost 90 percent of parents poled in the surveys said they purchased used cars which were priced under $10,000. However, while they were looking for less expensive cars, parents cited safety and reliability as their biggest concerns when purchasing cars for their children.
Generally safety-conscious parents tend to focus on car size, buying SUVs because they think bigger is better. However only the newest models of SUVs have the electronic stability control to prevent roll-overs and many parents can only afford the used models.

"Sedans not SUVs"
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recommends parents look for midsize sedans for their teens' first cars. The group says that sports cars are absolutely not a good choice for teens, but you don't have to buy a tank to get good safety. The IIHS has listed crash test ratings since 1995 on its web site www.highwaysafety.org. The Ford Taurus, Buick Century, Chevrolet Malibu, and the Volkswagen Jetta earned the best ratings for 2005.
When buying a car for a teenager, you should make sure it includes safety features like front and side airbags, and anti-lock brakes. Also, Parents should get used cars inspected by a mechanic and be sure to get a vehicle history report.

DRIVE RESPONSIBLY:
However, experts say the safety of the car doesn't matter quite as much as the driver's level of responsibility. Speed is often a forgotten issue among teens, especially young men. Also, teenagers often think they are good at multi-tasking, but realistically they're not! You want to try to minimize distractions including cell phones and other teen passengers. Minimize night time driving, and make sure teens are wearing seatbelts.
A DaimlerChrysler spokesman says that parents shouldn't necessarily shy away from a particular vehicle, as much as they should encourage good driving behavior. The automaker's website: www.roadreadyteens.org, features "Road Ready Teens," a video game to sharpen driving skills.

Winter Driving Tips

Overlooking the need to prepare for winter driving can be a mistake - and a deadly one at that. Driving on snow and ice demands concentration, awareness, skill and preparedness, and using common sense when inclement weather occurs. Conditions can change quickly. A road can be clear on the way to an appointment, yet hazardous when it's time to return. However, motorists can reduce their risks.
Being Prepared Reduces Risk:

Battery, alternator and starter: All should be in good working order. If the battery is near the end of its life, ask an auto technician to do a load test. Replace it early to ensure consistent starts.
Belts and hoses: If a belt or hose is showing wear or cracking, replace it.
Brakes: Check wear and replace pads or other mechanics, if needed.
Head, tail and emergency lights: Make sure all lights work.
Heater, defroster and fan: Make sure all systems work.
Radiator and antifreeze: Check fluid levels and antifreeze.
Windshield wiper blades: Replace blades annually. Use a snow brush and ice scraper to clear the windshield, side and rear windows, head, tail, and side lights. Using wipers as ice scrapers can damage wiper blades and mechanisms. De-icer also can be helpful if a vehicle is left uncovered for a period of time.
Wiper fluid: Windshield washer fluids vary; some more expensive brands are less likely to "slush." Monitor this and other fluid levels. Consider placing a spare bottle in the trunk.
Tires: All-weather tires with good tread generally work in Kansas. If it's necessary to travel out of the state, a motorist may want to consider snow tires. Check the conditions of the spare tire, and if the jack and lug wrench are in place.

Use These Tips to Reduce Risks on the Road:

Know before you go: Before you travel, check the weather conditions by listening to radio and television weather reports. You can also find out the latest weather-related road conditions by calling 511, the Kansas Advanced Traveler Information System. By calling 511 inside Kansas or 1-866-511-KDOT anywhere in the U.S., travelers can get route-specific road conditions and closures, construction detours and travel weather information for the Kansas State Highway System and the Kansas Turnpike. With updates every 15 minutes, Kansas 511 is a resource to help keep travelers informed about changing conditions. Information is provided every day, all day, and is free from landline phones. For cell phone users the call will mostly likely count against their minutes, but no roaming fee should be involved. Kansas road conditions are also available on the internet at http://511.ksdot.org. A statewide map will be displayed showing weather-related information on primary routes in the state. Below the state map you can click on links that will take you to regional map information. These maps show more routes, including all Kansas, U.S., and Interstate designated routes in the region. Adjust or postpone travel accordingly.
Is travel absolutely necessary? Advise others of departure, estimated travel time and route. If you fail to arrive, rescuers will know where to begin their search.
Travel during daylight hours.
Allow extra time for delays and slower traffic speeds.
Maximum visibility is very important. You must be able to see out, and other drivers must be able to see your vehicle. Clean frost and snow off all windows, mirrors, and lights. Use head lights as necessary.
Buckle up and properly secure children in safety seats.
Slow down. Allow extra stopping distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you. And, keep an eye on the vehicle behind you. Ice and snow significantly increases your needed stopping distance.
Reduce speed when approaching an intersection, which can be particularly dangerous as snow melts and refreezes, turning corners and approaching or using on and off ramps.
Accelerate and brake gently. A light foot on the gas is less likely to make wheels spin on ice and snow.
Proceed cautiously during rain and snow. The road can be slippery, especially when precipitation mixes with oil, grease, or dirt. Make turns slowly and gradually, especially in heavily traveled areas (such as intersections that may be icy from snow that melts and refreezes).
What to do in a skid: The type of brakes dictates recommended responses. Generally, the rule is to turn into a skid and then correct, with care not to overcorrect. With anti-lock brakes, press firmly on the brake pedal. Without anti-lock breaks, let up on the gas and pump the brakes to avoid wheel lockup. Practice starts, stops, and responding to a skid in a parking lot.
Slide of the Road: Staying with the vehicle is recommended. Tie a bright cloth or bandana to the antenna or put the hood up to signal the need for assistance. If you have a cell phone along, use it to call for help. To stay warm while waiting, bundle up and/or run the heater intermittently- perhaps 10 minutes an hour - to conserve fuel until help arrives. Lower windows two to three inches to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. When Snow is a contributing factor and a car or truck slides into a ditch or snow bank, make sure that the area around the exhaust is clear so that carbon monoxide fumes will be exhausted.
Keep the gas tank close to full to prevent condensation, add weights, and if stranded, provide the fuel needed to run the heater.
Keep a survival kit that includes at least the following items: Ice scraper and shovel, Non-perishable food, Jumper cables, A first-aid kit, Flashlights, Matches and candles or flares, Sand for traction, A towrope or chain, Extra clothing or blankets.
